You won’t need a cocktail umbrella for this take on the quintessential tiki drink. According to legend, the Mai Tai was created at Trader Vic’s restaurant in Oakland, California in 1944 and named by a Tahitian guest (Maita’i is Tahitian for “good”). The cocktail soon became synonymous with tiki culture and in the 1950s and 60s Mai Tais were ubiquitous in U.S. restaurants and bars.
